JOCKEY HOLLOW GIRL SCOUT CAMP

New Facilities and Service Upgrades
The focus of the Jockey Hollow renovation includes six new “campfire series” log cabins with lofts, seven activity shelters, a new troop house to accommodate the program center, a new aquatic center, and a renovated equestrian center, all designed and executed with responsible stewardship of Jockey Hollow in mind. Overnight cabin capacity will increase from 54 to 174 girls per night, and the summer day-camp will grow to 300 girls per week. It will be operable 365 days a year.

Morris Area Girl Scout Council has been the steward of the historically and environmentally significant 212-acre Jockey Hollow Camp in Mendham Township since 1929. The Camp is used by Girl Scouts for summer day camp, environmental programs, outdoor education and camping. Thousands of girls and volunteers participate in camp programs annually. The Camp is adjacent to the nation’s first national park, the Morristown National Historical Park. Environmentally, the camp is part of the Great Swamp Watershed and contains the headwaters of the Passaic River, designated as a Category I trout producing waters, and the equally pristine Primrose Brook.

The New, “Green” Jockey Hollow
The Council has embarked on a $4 million camp renovation and new construction project to provide a quality outdoor program where opportunities for leadership, empowerment and resourcefulness are plentiful. Due to the sensitivities of the site, the Council has worked diligently with archeological surveyors and environmental engineers to ensure that the new Jockey Hollow Girl Scout camp construction will not disturb historical artifacts, and will meet New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s stringent standards.

An environmentally and historically sensitive design provides the base camp of seven acres with an expansion of only eight-tenths of an acre, preserving acres of trees. Rustic log cabins use wood-burning stoves and skylights to help conserve energy. With an innovative wastewater management plan and a new sanitary system using Clivus Multrum and Envirolet composting toilets, the new Jockey Hollow Camp will use and showcase “green” technology. And, for the first time, Jockey Hollow Girl Scout Camp is handicapped accessible.

A walking tour of Jockey Hollow Girl Scout Camp can be scheduled by contacting Karen Cerreta at 973-927-7722 or kcerreta@magsc.org.
